Summary of the Repipe a House with PEX Video
So a lot of the houses now have the old galvanized pipes, which are steel water pipes. You know that over time that steel pipe is corroding and rotting out. So a lot of people will call us and they’ll have a leak here and a leak there and we have to go up to the attic and repair section by section by section. It ends up costing them a lot of money.
In the long run it’s usually well worth the customer’s time and money to go ahead and repipe the house with PEX. We used to repipe a house with copper pipe. With copper pipe we’d have to cut the walls out and make big old holes in the wall. We’d have to stub everything out and that was a big ordeal. Nowadays with PEX piping, which is a flexible poly piping, repiping a house is a lot easier.
Because PEX Is Flexible the Work is Faster
So when we repipe a house with PEX we can fish lines down the wall and not cut as much sheet rock. We still have to cut some sheet rock where we bring the piping out of the wall to the fixtures. So usually under the sinks and usually in the closet behind the shower we’ll have to cut some holes. Right at the base of the toilet is another place we’ll have to cut some holes. If it’s a real steep attic or if it’s in a tight corner or something, sometimes we may have to cut a hole in the ceiling but it’s very minimal compared to how it used to be.
So it’s gotten to be where it’s a lot easier to repipe a house, it’s not a major ordeal as it was when we had to do it in copper. And it’s been a real nice deal for homeowners. In repairing galvanized pipe section by section by section, you may spend $200-300 dollars for each section that you repair. It’s less expensive over the long run repiping the whole house and getting it all done at one time.

Of course each house is different on how difficult it is to repipe the house. Is the house one story or two story? Obviously a two story house is going to take a little more sheet rock cutting just to get it up through the second floor to the attics.
